Taxing matters: Kenyan citizens’ experience and opinions on tax.
This brief explores Kenyan citizens' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding taxation, examining awareness, compliance, and perceptions of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). Taxes are essential for national development, funding crucial public services like education, healthcare, and infrastructure, and fostering accountability between citizens and government. Despite their necessity, taxes are often seen as a burden. Data were collected from 3,000 respondents in the fifth round of Twaweza’s Sauti za Wananchi mobile phone panel survey, conducted in September 2021. Key findings reveal that VAT is the most recognized tax, and the primary reason for paying taxes is to support public services. The study underscores the importance of wise government spending to maintain public trust in the taxation system.
